Meet the Founder
Founder, Community & Wellness Collective (C&WC)
Candy Cannon is the founder of the Community & Wellness Collective (C&WC). She is currently pursuing a doctorate in behavioral health while working on her second master’s degree in clinical counseling. Candy holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in forensic psychology from Southern New Hampshire University.
Born and raised on the North Side of St. Louis near Fairground Park, an underserved community, Candy grew up in an environment where mental health resources were scarce, and open discussions about mental well-being were rare. Her personal experiences, shaped by the challenges of inadequate mental health education and resources, inspired her mantra: “Be who you needed when you were younger.”
Candy began her career in the mental health field as a direct support professional (DSP), taking on roles such as counselor, mentor, job coach, and workforce development specialist. Currently, she serves as a crisis clinician for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and as a community health educator, where she facilitates social-emotional learning (SEL) programs for youth. Her work involves supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and creating pathways for growth and resilience.
Through her leadership at C&WC, Candy continues to address systemic inequities, promote mental health advocacy, and foster representation. Her culturally tailored programs, mentorship initiatives, and community outreach empower individuals from underserved communities to thrive and succeed. Candy is dedicated to creating equitable opportunities and building a world where everyone has access to the resources and representation they need to flourish.

How the Lack of Diversity Impacts Care
The lack of diversity in mental and behavioral health fields has serious implications for care quality and accessibility:
(Click each toggle to learn more)
Mistrust in Healthcare Systems
Patients from underrepresented groups may feel misunderstood or dismissed by providers who lack cultural competence.
Barriers to Communication
Limited language fluency among providers prevents accurate understanding and diagnosis for non-English speaking patients.
Misdiagnoses or Inadequate Treatment
Cultural factors influencing symptoms may go unrecognized, leading to improper care.
Underutilization of Services
Communities with fewer relatable providers are less likely to seek or continue care.
Gender-Specific Needs
The underrepresentation of men in mental health fields can limit gender-matched care for male patients who feel more comfortable discussing personal issues with male providers.
